Limitation of the Canon 50mm f1.8?

Love for coffee 005, originally uploaded by Mervin Chiang.

I used a stand, set ISO to 200 and connected a cable. This was taken f1.8 at 1/6 speed. So ideally this one should be clear, but it is not at 1:1... It's so disappointing... I guess you match price with quality. This lens costed $120 :)

  1. Push to f2.8 and try again. These prime lenses tend to be softer at its extreme f-stops.

  2. I know, but I don't want to. The whole point of this shot was the shallow DOF! Unless you have a special "old school" method of doing that with f2.8 I am eager to learn... :)

  3. So let me try to understand your shot. Were you trying to get the entire picture sharp and clear? Or were you trying to capture the shallow DOF? The f2.8 suggestion is to sharpen the subject up and will not sharpen the background.

Only way I can think of to capture a completely sharp picture of background and subject is... not use a prime lens ;) These 50mm are great for portraiture shots, where you want to go for the shallow DOF to soften th background, to intensify the subject.

If you want to use this lens to "increase" the DOF is to:
    1. flood the shot with harsh light, and lots of it, or
    2. step backwards, capture the entire scene as the subject and let the 18.1 megapixels do it's magic by cropping in :)

  4. I'm not trying to make the shot all in focus. What I meant was even the small strip that was supposed to be in focus only is not sharp enough! When I view it at 1:1, I see some "softness" in it. I think it's just me being too much of a perfectionist!

  5. ahh... so like I said, push to f2.8 :) even my f1.4 50mm is soft at f1.4, and only gets better at f2.8... I kid you not ;)
